Twenty Days of Lodoss War - Day 2 - Blazing Departure
21st-Sep-2010 09:27 pm
A dwarf, a priest, and an elf walk into a village... which sounds like the setup to a bad joke and/or the formation of an adventuring party. Take your pick.

Blazing Departure is the episode where the RPG origins of Lodoss War are most blatantly displayed, where the rattling of the dice in the background almost drowns out the soundtrack. From the Level 1 fighter (being generous for a moment) to the entry of the three non-resident party members to the more than somewhat contrived exiling of the Level 1 fighter, it is hard to pick the most obvious RPG moment: they all are.

To be fair forming an adventuring party is often somewhat contrived in an RPG, but it tends not to make good storytelling.

Blazing Departure amply justifies the decision to not make this episode as the pilot. The momentum from the Prologue to the Legend carries you through because it so effectively foreshadowed how much interesting stuff is coming. There are (slight) further hints by way of giving Ghim some motivation to be travelling, and Deedlit gets to be cool.

But otherwise this is a fairly lightweight episode, and far from the best that Lodoss War later showed itself to be capable of.

It appears I have an open topic for tomorrow. Whatever shall I talk about? And, yes, that's a hint for you to make suggestions.

Have you experienced any of the other iterations of Lodoss? Manga, the Dreamcast game, etc. There might be a topic in that.

Failing that, have you seen the Heroic Knight TV series or Legend of Crystania spin-off?

I think I've got the Legend of Crystania movie which, as I recall, seemed to be at best tangentially related to the OAV series.

I haven't seen the Heroic Knight TV series. Checking Wikipedia I see it came out in 1998 which means the fansubs probably didn't appear in Perth until 1999.

Which is when I moved to Melbourne...
