Writer's Block: News development

What's the first major news event that you remember hearing about as a child? Where did you learn about it? How did it impact your world view?

The Dismissal. I don't think it changed my worldview much then beyond an awareness that something important had happened.

But it certainly drove my interest in psephology once I was old enough to understand the moment, and what it represented for Australian history.

The Dismissal may be my first true "flashbulb memory" - the first completely unexpected newsworthy event that I can remember almost perfectly. I was in my high-school biology class, and our (American) teacher came in and told us that the Governor had just sacked the Prime Minister. Everyone, whatever their political persuasion, was gobsmacked and assumed she'd gotten it wrong.

I was in primary school so I didn't really understand what was happening beyond that something was happening and that it all seemed to be terribly important.
