Anime Archetypes

Evidently I've wound up doing a panel on Anime Archetypes on Sunday night .This amuses me greatly so I'm going to run with it and try to make it fun for all involved.

What I'd like to get is a list of Anime Archetypes that the audience would like to see discussed.

[Aside: For values of "discussed" that include being trashed by a grumpy old guest who has been becoming increasingly critical of certain archetypes/tropes over the years. But I digress.]

Once I have that list from comments posted here* I'll try to come up with the following for each:

- Do I think it is an archetype (references to TV Tropes may be made)
- The first usage of it that I can recall
- The best usage of it that I can recall
- Whether or not inclusion is generally a good thing or a bad thing
- Wherther or not inclusion is enough to drive me away on principle

Volunteers to help discuss would also be welcome. :)

*And, yes, that is an utterly shameless** plug for comments.
**What? You thought I wouldn't stoop to that? Bwahahahahahaha. Cough. Splutter.

OK some I have seen coming up
Scary Ninja Girl: Noir from Noir is the obvious example, as is Chloe from the same series. Key from Key the Metal Idol is another
So bad it don't fit it's Skin. Almost everyone from Hellsing as well as various characters from Trigun.

I don't watch enough anime these days to help more :-)

Thanks for the input.

Noir I'm going to call Girls With Guns rather than Scary Ninja Girl. And, Key? Really?

Not sure what you mean by the Hellsing/Trigun label.

From memory of the Victoria Seras character in Hellsing I'm going to guess that you meant Ms Fanservice.

Which is nice since I wanted an excuse to rant a bit about that one...

:)

When I did a similar anime archetypes panel a while back I ended up having two versions of the 'girl with gun' archetypes. The older, femme fatale archetypes e.g. Mireille Bouquet from Noir; but also younger girls like the cyborgs from Gunslinger Girl. Even though she doesn't carry a gun, I classified Mikoto Minagi from Mai Hime as a young gun girl.

I was about to invite you to be on the panel when I looked at your journal. :(

I take your point but I would tend to discuss the femme fatale (Mireille) and the schoolgirl (Kirika, Mikoto) as different archetypes that come into play independently of the weaponry archetypes.

Fair enough. I think the 'schoolgirl' archetype contains many sub archetypes - 'cute', 'demure', 'violent', 'tsundre' etc.

And I thinking about including a "not-schoolgirl" archetype to comment on how rare it is...and how satisfying it is when done well.

There will, however, be some snarky criticism on the subject of Ms Fanservice in the panel.

I get so tired of that sometimes.

Key (the series at least) I've decided is going down as the Mind Screw archetype...
