Canberra to (almost) Goulburn
3rd-May-2008 07:51 pm
Open Road!
So I've started the three day ride to Sydney with the first leg to Goulburn. Alas, I ended up cheating at the last.

First up I was late leaving Canberra (packing etc) which wouldn't have mattered if I'd followed the same route I used last time.

But no, the flatter Federal Hwy with the broad shoulders and the (mostly) nice surface was just so last month. This time I was going to take the back route via Bungendore and Tarago.

Which is actually quite a pretty route and reasonably light on traffic. It is also about 15Km longer and clobbers you with monstrously big and steep hills from the get-go.

Aieeee! The horror, the horror! Actually it wasn't all bad, I occasionally got some "Wow, lets do that again!" descents but it was a serious drain on my energy levels from early in the day.

Bungendore was about 40Ks out and where I had lunch.

30Ks of more hills later at Tarago it was starting to get cold (at 3PM!) and I was worried enough to ask for the phone number of a Goulburn taxi service.

Just after 5PM I reached the G(oulburn) 15(kms) sign and gave in. I timed it just right- there was just enough sunlight left for me to break the trike down and put on another layer of clothing.

Distance: 92.39. About the same as the route I didn't take.
Average: 15.67Kph. A crawl.
Ride Time: 5:53:38
Max Speed: 77Kph. I said that there were some good descents. :)

On to Robertson tomorrow with an earlier start and (hopefully) a flatter, cruisier, ride.

77kph? Sweet.

Oh yes indeedy!

I couldn't tell exactly where or when it happened though. Times like that are strictly eyes on the road, hands on the controls...
