Would you like doing something enjoyable while reducing your CO2 emissions? I suggest using a recumbent tricycle for commuting/leisure. No more sore bum, back, shoulders, neck or wrists: tadpole and delta recumbent trikes are really "sinfully comfortable".
I've used mine daily for six months, mainly on cycle paths and quiet streets where it's perfectly safe - using a flag, high-visibility safety vest and lights at night. But while it's road legal, don't sue me if you mix it with heavy traffic and get flattened.

First paragraph: So far, so good. Nothing to argue with there. Didn't mention the recumbent grin though.
Second paragraph, first sentence: Still good. A responsible rider, looking out for his own safety.
Second paragraph, second sentence: What the [expletive deleted]?!!!! This is simply not true, and not helpful to cycling in general or recumbents in particular.
Speaking from the perspective of two and a half car free years, and 13000+ KM, a responsibly ridden recumbent is very safe indeed. I don't have any problems with visibility and find most drivers to be courteous and respectful.
