| About 150Ks short for June, which means an extra 25 a month for the rest of the year (on top of April's deficit). So, 7500 will be a challenge this year but I still think it is doable. | |
|
| Aka Riding and Retail (therapy). What were you expecting? :) After a long work month (160 hours!), a Saturday of not much, a Sunday of not much more, I was feeling like playing a bit on my day off. ( So I did. :) )*The outdoor clothing companies seem to encourage stealth pedestrians which is one of the reasons I wanted more (and heavier duty) front lighting. | |

| I've been hearing these unsubstantiated rumours that there's this useful thing that cyclists enjoy riding in. I believe it's called "daylight". I don't suppose there's any evidence to support this rumour anywhere?

| Halfway through the month and I've only got ~240Ks in, which is about 80Ks short of where I need to be.
Given that I'm probably working next weekend I'm going to be well short of 3750 for the year come 1 July. Sigh.

| Headed off nice and early to the gym this morning so I could get in a good cardio session prior to the weights work. Only to realise halfway there that I'd left the bike lock at home. So I turned around and raced home to get it.
And as soon as I turned around it started raining.
When I left home again it was closer to my usual departure time...and it had stopped raining. :)

| Had a very pleasant ride with Patrick yesterday, followed by an OK game of the WWII variant of Wings of War.
Granted that it may be unfair to dismiss this variant after only one game but it just didn't seem to work as well. I think that both of us definitely prefer the WWI variant and I'm not all that likely to buy more of the WWII version.

| Last night I had the somewhat disturbing experience of the dynamo not engaging properly on the wheel due to the wet conditions. ie I was riding on dark wet roads with no headlight.
I got home and experimented by rotating the dynamo mounting so that it is more centred on the tyre. This morning the roads were still wet but the dynamo seemed to be working fine.
It does raise the possibility of having to adjust the dynamo mounting whenever I change the type of tyre used on the rear wheel. Mind you I've only done that once so far so not really a big deal.

| Not even the police escort saved these cyclists.
WARNING: the news article behind the link has a quite shocking photograph.
Obviously you should be careful as a cyclist on the roads, but sometimes it just won't matter. :(

| Yesterday Fuse Recumbents serviced the trike for me and remounted the fairing (including a new layer of plastic to keep it from scratching the paintwork again). While that was happening I took a long walk down t Commonwealth Place to see the Dreams on Wheels cycling exhibition put on by the Danish Embassy. Many cool bikes and presentations on how to get cycling infrastructure right. Today I slept in and then rode up to see dalekboy and shazgirl in the afternoon. Much pleasant conversation ensued before encroaching darkness turned me into a pumpkin. The fairing isn't folding as far forward which is making mounting/dismounting awkward. Will have to look at adjustments for that but not sure what will work best at the moment. | |

| Yesterday morning involved much fog over Canberra.
Oddly I found it both relaxing and nervy at the same time. Fog can be beautiful and I have some Welsh and Norse ancestors that it sings to. On that level I find it soothing.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, I also have to deal with the reduced visibility. Both my ability to see cars (and judge distances) and that of the drivers who might not see me. So some degree of caution applies on mornings like those.

| Oh I'm so glad I set up the ecovelo feed. The latest post is a well thought out piece on reducing reliance on cars without jumping the whole way at once. Whilst it's true that I'm currently living car-free, it is also true to say that this was as much an accident as it was deliberate decision. - Tags:cycling, musings

| Back in October I posted about a stolen bike that belonged to a lovely lady who was on the Adelaide to Melbourne ride with me Well, it has been found and the lady has her beautiful bike back. Yay! In other news it was only a matter of time before the new personal trainer had me doing the plank. Twice this morning, for 45s each time, so I'm quite pleased by that. | |
|
| I put the dynamo on to the rear wheel on Monday morning, haven't taken it off yet, and won't be taking it off tonight.
This means it is over three days since I went riding in daylight...

| Snaffled from 'BentriderOnline: "For those of you that missed it, Alan Barnard has decided to shut down The Recumbent Blog. The site will remain up but his cycling interests have moved beyond recumbents. While his still a confirmed recumbent fan, his interests have begun to focus more on trasportationally-oriented cycling. His new Ecovelo site reflects that. Expect the same insite and stunning photography that made The Recumbent Blog so popular. " Lazy fellow that I am I've just created a LJ feed for it. If you're interested it can be found at: ecovelo. | |

| That I'm glad to be alive. The trike is always fun but sometimes you get moments of pure beauty that are just wonderful to experience.
Picture if you will a straight downhill stretch of a wide tree-lined road in Yarralumla with the autumn leaves carpeting the verges in an orange-brown carpet, with a whiff of smoke from someone's fireplace in the in the misty and foggy air.
It is early enough in the morning that there's no traffic so there's almost no noise (not even from the Arcadia since I lubed the chain last night) so I'm cruising downhill in silence through an almost magical scene.

| Treadly's current post has a good analysis of the driver's "explanation", and links to a number of other cycling bloggers with fairly pointed things to say.
For reference what little I had to say on the subject is here.
